S02. Add a product
This procedure uses ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English. Each instruction is one sentence in the active voice.
- Owner
- You (solo operation).
- Trigger
- You have a new gemstone to sell. The gemstone has a SKU and a price.
- Approval
- You approve the data and the photographs before you set the status to Active.
- Scope
- This procedure is for one gemstone. For a ring setting, use procedure S03.
Procedure
- Open the Products page in the Shopify admin.
- Select Add product. You can also open the new product page directly.
- Type the title. Use this format: gem type, shape, carat weight.
- Write the description. Write only facts that you can prove.
- Add the photographs and the videos. Write the alt text for each file.
- Type the price.
- Type the SKU in the Inventory section.
- Set the quantity to 1. Set it to 0 instead if this gemstone will go on a Shopify purchase order (S00, S04) — receiving the purchase order then brings it to 1.
- Turn on the inventory tracking.
- Turn off the option that continues the sale at zero stock.
- Set the product type, the vendor, and the category.
- Fill in the gemstone fields. The table below gives the list.
- Fill in the certificate fields, if a laboratory certificate exists.
- Write the SEO title and the SEO description.
- Set the status. Use Draft until you approve the product.
- Select Save.

Rules
- One gemstone is one product. Do not make a gemstone a variant of a different product.
- The quantity is always 1, or 0 until a Shopify purchase order receives it (S00, S04). Either way, a unique gemstone must not sell two times.
- Do not claim an origin, a treatment, or a certificate without evidence.
- Write an unknown value as unknown. Do not guess a value.
- A missing certificate does not prove the quality. Do not write that it does.
- Keep the tags empty, unless an approved operational reason exists.
- Do not let a tag disagree with a field.
Required evidence
- The laboratory certificate, if one exists.
- The photographs of the gemstone.
- The saved product page in the Shopify admin.
Note — Shopify can change the product screens and the standard fields. Check this procedure against the admin after a Shopify update. The Shopify changelog gives the changes.
