S03. Add a ring setting

This procedure uses ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English. Each instruction is one sentence in the active voice.

Owner: You (solo operation).
Trigger: You have a new ring setting for Make Your Ring.
Approval: You approve the photographs, the prices, and the compatibility data before you set the status to Active.
Scope: This procedure is for one ring setting. For a gemstone, use procedure S02.

Difference from a gemstone

A ring setting and a gemstone use two different product models. Do not mix them.

A ring setting has variants. A gemstone has no variants.
A ring setting is made to order. A gemstone is a unique item with a quantity of 1.
The customer finds a ring setting only in Make Your Ring. The customer finds a gemstone in the catalog.

Procedure

Open the Shopify admin. Go to the Products page.
Select Add product.
Type the title. Add the words Ring Setting after the name of the setting.
Write the description. Tell the customer that you make the ring to order.
Add the photographs. Show the front view and the side profile.
Write the alt text for each file. Give the metal and the view in the alt text.
Set the product type, the vendor, and the category.
Add the tags make-your-ring and ring-setting.
Add the option Metal. Add one value for each metal that you offer.
Add the option Ring size. Add one value for each size that you offer.
Type the price of each variant.
Type the SKU of each variant.
Turn off the inventory tracking for each variant.
Fill in the compatibility fields, if the setting does not accept every gemstone.
Set the status. Use Draft until you approve the setting.
Select Save.

Options

The two options give one variant for each combination. Seven metals and five sizes give 35 variants.

Compatibility fields

These fields tell Make Your Ring which gemstones the setting accepts. Fill them in only if the setting has limits.

Minimum Length (mm) / Maximum Length (mm)	The length limits of the gemstone.
Minimum Width (mm) / Maximum Width (mm)	The width limits of the gemstone.
Minimum Depth (mm) / Maximum Depth (mm)	The depth limits of the gemstone.
Minimum Carat Weight / Maximum Carat Weight	The weight limits of the gemstone.
Allow Dimension Rotation	Set this field to true if the length and the width can change places.
Compatibility Notes	Your notes about the limits of this setting.

Current state — No ring setting uses the compatibility fields today. Each description says that the setting accepts every gemstone in Make Your Ring. Fill in these fields when a setting gets a limit.

Rules

Do not track the inventory of a ring setting. You make each ring to order.
Do not add the gemstone as a third option. Shopify permits three options only.
The gemstone stays a separate product. The cart holds the gemstone and the setting as two lines.
Do not put a ring setting in a collection that the customer can browse. Make Your Ring is the only path to a setting.
Use the same metal names and the same size names on each setting.

The approved price of each metal.
The saved product page.
